Interview:

How has writing the book changed the way you thought you would parent your son?
I’m not sure it has just yet. My son is only 9 months old so I believe I’ll see the impact of my book as he matures to a point where these concepts become applicable.

What do you think is the most important lesson in the book?
I believe they are all have their level of importance and will come into play at some point in Summit’s life. The only 2 notes that were strategic in placement were notes 1 and 25. I book-ended with these 2 because of the overarching themes they present. By honoring commitments and knowing that there are no shortcuts in life I believe this feeds the understanding and execution of the other 23 notes.

How did you balance writing the book with your work?
I wrote mostly while traveling for work. Planes and hotels were my respites for writing. This way I could be productive when I was away from home and not take away any quality time from my wife when not traveling.

Do you ever get writer’s block? What helps you overcome it?
Anyone that says they don’t get writer’s block is not being completely honest. If you just put down on paper everything you vomited, that shows me you care less about quality and more about quantity. When I hit a stage of writer’s block I had to move. Typically this would mean going for a walk, hitting the gym or hiking a mountain. Mountains always inspire me and typically start flooding my brain with new ideas. Not all of those ideas make the final cut, but the stimulation forces me through the barriers that were impeding my thought.

What would you hope your son will say someday about this book?
I don’t expect all of these notes to resonate with my son. I do hope, however, that he looks back on these life lessons and at minimum knows they came from a place of love, hope and inspiration. If he’s able to make just one better life decision because of them then it was all worth it.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what 3 books would you want with you?
One would be TREASURE ISLAND (inspirational purposes). A second would be UNBROKEN (motivational purposes and my all-time favorite book) and HOW TO STAY ALIVE BY BEAR GRYLLS (practical reasons here.)

What’s the most surprising thing you learned about writing a book?
It takes an extreme level of discipline to finish this. I felt as if I was living Note 9 throughout the process. “Compete to complete.” I’m sure I could have spent another year fine-tuning this, but I wanted to ensure it was completed prior to his birth. I wrote all the notes prior to my son being born. I saved the epilogue for after. I wanted to experience the emotion of watching him come into this world prior to completing the final sentences to Notes to My Son.
